Unbiased journalism in Taminadu - Rest in........
The primary question for someone like me, these days in Tamilnadu - Is there something called unbiased media in this state, and is it ok to call large sections of the media sympathetic to one major ideology in this state as 'neutral media' - because, that is what is the kind of definition even established journalists seem to be giving, in respect of Chennai and Tamilnadu.
Until recently, at least to an extent, we all thought that a large part of the media in Tamilnadu was neutral, with may be a handfiul of journalists taking sides or having no qualms that they are side with a political party, or say a kind of pan-regional idealogy, something like a Dravidian mindset.
Thanks to the developments, and muck and counter muck in the recent past in the social media, by journalists themself or Youtubers who hold sympathy and exist to propagate a view point, be it right wing (BJP/RSS) or Dravidian viewpoint (DMK/ADMK etc) or a more widely accepted, and supposedly prevalent view, in the name of Dravidian-ism or Periarism, we have now a fairly clear view on how the Tamil regional media (all kinds, including print, web, and broadcast) is very comfortable in saying that they are around here to strengthen the roots of the Dravidian movement, and also make sure that the right wing or its ideas do not gain an inch of foothold, in this red and black part of the world.
It has now come to be-known that in a state like Tamilnadu, being neutral is all about saving the Dravidian movement or whatever, from any attack by forces that are against the so called spirit and pulse of what the Tamil culture stands for in the name of the historic evolution of the movement, that was ushered in by people led by Periar, Anna, and Dr Kalaignar.
What is a wee bit surprising in all this, is that even leading lights in the Tamil media, or the so many neutral observers are fine with this kind of 'neutral' journalism, that is more eager to serve the pillars of Dravidianism, than to serve the fundamental tenets of what neutral, unbiased, and good journalism stands for. And it is indeed an irony that, even while most of the regional satraps of the famed Dravidian movement keep harping on the fact that this is the land of Periar, and no force on earth will even make the so called Aryans and right-wingers get an inch of feet in this land, the media here thinks that they need to be saviors of this same rock solid and popularly accepted Dravidian movement.
Also, despite the media here being a preponderance of such forces that are sympathetic to the Dravidian ideology and forces, even the slightest hint of even one Youtuber or some random person putting up a video, which is best ignored, is blown out of proportion, giving it undue attention, which it would never have gotten in the normal course (if it was ignored). And thanks to the hordes of loyalists these 'neutral Dravidian sympathetic' media have on the social space, any person, known or unknown, the moment there is a divergent view put out, is branded either as a right wing agent, or someone who has an agenda that will destroy the mighty Dravidian forces, lock stock and barrel.
This is not to say that there is right on the part of everything that the so called anti Dravidian media, even if it be a small section, do. They have their own bunch of vices, and misdoings, which may be include try to fan communal views, or things that are against what is commonly here known as the secular fabric. They do also try and make merry in a vitiated situation, and that is enough amount of provocation for the Dravidian sympathetic media in Chennai and TN.
In all this, the sad fact is - there is nothing called neutral and impartial media in Tamilnadu, and that seems to be an accepted fact by even the people, who consume news from all the journalists here.
